Sleep Apnea Treatment in Tampa Bay, FL
SLEEP APNEA TREATMENT
30 million people have some form of sleep apnea in the US. Mood swings, lack of concentration, weight gain, and irritability can all be traced back to an adequate amount or lack of restful sleep.
A staggering 23 million Americans have undiagnosed sleep apnea.
Are you one of them? Find out now.
What Causes Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is caused by an obstructed airway. That obstruction can be partial or full, but the result is the inability to move air into the lungs, causing some degree of what is known as “sleep disturbance”.
These disturbances, throughout the night, can cause you to choke, or even wake up at night.
There are many different types of obstructions that can inhibit your ability to breathe and sleep at night. Some people have larger necks which, while lying down, can add more weight to the airway, causing an obstruction.
Others might have a lack of strength in the muscles surrounding the airway causing it to sag and obstruct the air as it enters.
And others may not have the sublingual space (the area surrounding the tongue) development necessary to support their tongue, which can cause a problem when sleeping.
Finally, some people have excess tissue in their mouth that can cause them struggle to breathe when sleeping.
The Importance of Restful Sleep
Sleep is essential to recovery. During sleep, our immune system produces the proteins that help protect us from infections and diseases. Our brains remove toxins, and our muscles have the time to repair and rebuild muscle and tissue.
Sleep is a vital necessity.
Without it, we encounter a host of unwanted conditions.
But to sleep properly, you have to breathe without obstructions. Snoring, shortness of breath, and exhaustion when waking are all signs that you may not be getting sufficient, restful sleep.
Our Sleep Apnea Treatment
If it is determined that you have sleep apnea and would be a good candidate for our treatment, our doctor will go over possible treatment options and available treatment plans.
For immediate relief, we have mandibular advancement devices which help to push the lower jaw forward, creating more space in the mouth and making it easier to breathe at night.
For those that require acute treatment, we offer NightLase and EMFACE, which can rapidly stimulate the muscles, making them stronger, to better support the tongue and alleviate symptoms.
For some, an expanded oral cavity may be required. To treat this, we offer several mandibular devices including VIVOS®, SomnoDent®, and Homeoblock™, depending on what will provide the best result.
Finally, there is MYOBRACE®, which over time can help grow and shape the the jaws properly, and thus eliminate the need for further treatment.
